Family Album USA - Episode 2 - The Blind Date
In ACT one of this story, Susan Stewart and Harry Bennett don't know each other. They have a dinner date tonight. But Harry is late, very late. He is lost somewhere in New York City. Will Harry find Susan's apartment?

Coming up in ACT two, Susan and Harry go to a restaurant in Susan's neighbourhood. Susan knows Somsak the owner (of the restaurant). Somak is from Thailand and serve Thai food in his restaurant. But something is wrong, Harry leaves the restaurant. Why is Harry leaving?

In ACT three of this story, Susan has dinner with Marilyn, her sister in law. Then, Harry surprises Susan and they talk. Will Susan and Harry see each other again?

Susan and Harry are on a blind date. They don’t know each other, and this is their first meeting. Blind dates are common in the United States. A friend or a member of the family often arranges this kind of date.

Harry’s daughter Michelle stays with a baby-sitter while Harry is on a date with Susan. It is common for American parents to pay a baby-sitter to watch their children for an evening. Teenage girls and boys often work as baby- sitters to earn money after school.

People in the United States often eat international foods. Chinese, Italian, Mexican, and Japanese restaurants are especially popular. In New York City you can find the food of most nations in the world.

In the United States, about 5% of all jobs are in agriculture, fishing, and mining. About 25%, are in manufacturing and construction. The rest of the jobs are in service professions, such as teaching, selling, and medicine.

ma’am: madam Use ma’am when you speak directly to a woman and you don’t know her name. To a young woman, you  say miss. To a man, you say sir. เป็นคำพูดที่ใช้พูดกับผู้หญิงเมื่อไม่รู้จักชื่อของเธอ ถ้าเป็นคนที่อายุยังไม่เยอะ อาจจะใช้คำว่า miss ซึ้งถ้าเป็นผู้ชายจะใช้คำว่า sir

Nice to meet you = It’s nice to meet you. Use this expression when you meet someone for the first time. ยินดีที่ได้รู้จัก ใช้พูดเมื่อพบใครเป็นครั้งแรก

Pleased to meet you = เหมือนคำว่า Nice to meet you. The complete form is I’m pleased to meet you. ประโยคเต๊มๆคือ I’m pleased to meet you

What pretty flowers! — The flowers are very pretty. เป็นคำชมว่าดอกไม้สวย

Excuse the mess. = I’m sorry that things are not neat เป็นคำกล่าวขอโทษเมื่อบ้านรก

sister-in-law: a brother’s wife พี่หรือน้องสะไภ้

reservation: an arrangement to hold a table in a restaurant for a specific time You also make reservations for hotel rooms, theater tickets, and airline tickets. การจอง(โต๊ะ)ลาวงหน้า เราสามารถจองห้องที่โรงแรมหรือตั๋วหนังหรือตั๋วเครื่องบินได้

baby-sitter:  Parents pay a baby-sitter to watch a child while they are away from home. พี่เลี้ยง(เด็ก)

five five five … seventeen twenty:  This is one way to say the telephone number  555-1720. เป็นวิธีการบอกเบอร์โทรศัพท์อีกแบบหนึ่งของ เบอร์ 555-1720 สังเกตว่าสามตัวแรกพูดเลขแต่ละตัวแบบเดี่ยวๆ และสี่ตัวหลังบอกเป็นคู่ 

five five five … one seven two oh: This is another way to say the telephone number 555-1720. Pronounce the first three numbers of a telephone number by saying one number at a time. Say the last four numbers individually or in two parts. เป็นอีกวิธีการบอกเบอร์โทรศัพท์ เบอร์ 555-1720 สังเกตว่าต่างจากวิธีแรก โดยพูดแต่เเลขแต่ละตัวแบบเดี่ยวๆ

Shall we … ? Use Shall I or Shall we to make a suggestion. This is a polite use. เป็นการออกความเห็น แบบสุภาพ บางทีคำนี้ถ้าอยู่โดดๆไม่มีประโยคตามเป็น Shall we?จะหมายถึงไปกันเถอะ

Hope to see you again = I hope to see you again. Use this expression when you say Good-bye to a new friend. หวังว่าจะได้พบคุณอีก เป็นประโยคในการกล่าวลาเพื่อนใหม่

fun: a good time มีความสุข

After you = I will go after you. This is a polite expression. เป็นการกล่าวแบบสุภาพเพื่อจะบอกว่า เชิญคุณไปก่อน

Thai restaurant This restaurant serves food from the country of Thailand. ร้านอาหารไทย

Would you like … ? = Do you want.. Use this phrase to offer food or a drink. เป็นวลีที่บริกรจะถามเพื่อแนะนำอาหาร เป็นคำสุภาพกว่า do you want

I’d like … = I want… Use this phrase to order food or a drink.  How about… ? This phrase is another way to offer. เป็นการสั่งอาหารแบบสุภาพ

mee krob: a popular Thai dish หมี่กรอบ

I’ll have … This phrase is another way to order. ผมขอ เป็นอีกวลีที่จะใช้สั่งอาหาร

May I bring you … ? This phrase is another way to offer. เป็นอีกวลีในการเสริฟอาหาร

I’ll take care of everything. = I’ll get everything for you.  ผมจะจัดทุกอย่างให้คุณเอง

starving: very hungry หิวมาก

vice-president of new toy development: People bring Susan ideas for new toys. She has an important job in the company. รองผู้จัดการแผนกการพัฒนาของเล่น 

CPA: certified public accountant . An accountant keeps business records. To become a CPA; an accountant must pass a government test. ผู้ตรวจสอบบัญชี 

firm: a business company. บริษัท

Please forgive me = I’m sorry ผมขอโทษ

What’s the matter? = What’s the problem? เกิดอะไรขึ้น

stomachache: a pain in the stomach The pronunciation of ch in this word sounds like k. ปวดท้อง

nervous: not calm; upset ประหม่า

I’m not complaining. = It’s not a problem for me. This is an informal expression. ไม่มีปัญหา เป็นคำพูดไม่เป็นทางการ

How… ? Susan doesn’t complete her question. Harry understands that she means "How did you get inside the building?" เป็นคำถามที่ซูซันไม่ได้ถามทั้งประโยคแต่แฮร์รี่ก้เขาใจว่าเธอหมายถึง "คุณเข้ามาในตึกได้อย่างไร"

apologize: to say you’re sorry กล่าวขอโทษ

As a matter of fact… = It is true … จริงๆแล้ว

where did the time go? = The time passed very ‘ quickly. เวลาช่างผ่านไปเร็วจัง

You know something? = Do you know something? This expression means "I really want to say this to you." คุณรู้ไหม/รู้ไหม

going to Harry says gonna. This is the informal pronunciation of the future tense with going to. กำลังจะ

Have a safe trip home. You can use this expression when you say good-bye. กลับบ้านปลอดภัยนะ กลับบ้านดีๆนะ

I never liked that umbrella stand. To make a situation less serious, you can use the expression I never liked ____  or I never liked ____ anyway.  For example, imagine that a dish falls and breaks. Instead of making someone feel bad about it, you might just say, I never liked that dish, anyway.
